The volunteering experience

volunteer in TanzaniaThis section will help you prepare for life in Tanzania. We find that volunteers who arrive with a flexible attitude survive and thrive in Tanzania.

When you arrive our staff will show you around the local area, help you settle into the volunteer house, and help you choose a project to work on if you haven't done this before you arrive. If you have any questions or problems during your stay our staff will help you as much as they possibly can.

When living and working in Tanzania you will frequently hear the phrase "This is Africa" as an explanation for all sorts of things. Please don't expect to find the same structure, standards, and attitudes as in your home country. You're here to experience something different - embrace it!

There is a Western proverb: 'The West has the watches and the Africans have the time.' Everything here in Tanzania is pole pole (slowly, slowly) and you may feel frustrated at the lack of progress. The best way to deal with it is to accept that the culture is different. Please try and enjoy it, it is all part of the experience. Just enjoy all the cultural encounters that are set in your way!
