Adult English Classes
20 to 30 adults from the local Stone Town and Bububu community come every weekday afternoon to the AIT house for English lessons. Classes are 1 to 2 hours long and take place from 3:00pm – 4:30pm. Groups are generally divided into beginner and advanced/conversation. 2-3 volunteers teach each group at a time. The adult students bring their own writing materials and range in skill level. The adults are open to lots of different types of English lessons, ranging from serious discussions on culture and politics to language games on a chalkboard. Many volunteers will teach at a school in the morning and then do 2 or 3 adult English classes per week so that they also have an activity in the afternoon.
AIT Zanzibar partners with Drug Free Zanzibar in order to send volunteers to sober houses. Sober houses are rehabilitation centers for people recovering from drug or alcohol addictions. Many of the residents stay at these houses in order to transition back into the world and learn some new skills along the way.
Bububu Sober House
Bububu Sober House is very close to the AIT house. Approximately 20 residents live at this house at any given time. Hours depend on the residents’ schedules month to month, but are usually from 9:00am–12:00pm. The house isn’t near a main road, so someone working at the sober house will wait at the road each morning to accompany volunteers to the house. Volunteers at this house have most recently taught Spanish, Italian, French and drama classes to volunteers, but they are also looking for classes in business, accounting, typing and English.
Bombay Sober House
Bombay Sober House is a 20 minute daladala ride from the AIT house. Approximately 20 residents live at this house at any given time. Hours are from 9:00am – 12:00pm. The house is not far from a main road, but a sober house staff member will accompany volunteers for the first few days that they are working at the house. Residents here are looking for classes in business, accounting, English, Italian, typing and art. Residents are also looking for ways to start income generating opportunities in order to start businesses once they complete their recovery.
Detroit Sober House
A 20 minute daladala ride from the AIT house and is a short walk from Bombay Sober House. Approximately 25 residents live at this house at any given time. Many of these residents have spent time in other sober houses and are now transitioning to the post recovery phases of their lives. The residents here are also skilled artists, and have spent the past few months setting up t-shirts, clothing and art businesses (all of which have been overseen by an AIT volunteer). Volunteers are needed to help with art projects, t-shirts making, English classes and yoga.
AIT Football Team
AIT Zanzibar is now sponsoring a children’s football team from a nearby village and volunteers practice with the team every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoon. After practice, the volunteers give a 30 minute English lesson, incorporating football terms and ideas into the lessons in order to engage the children. The children range in age from 12-14 years old. Practice takes place in a field very close to the AIT house. An AIT staff member takes volunteers to practice or more experienced volunteer. This takes place from 4:30pm 6:30pm. Many volunteers sign up for this project in addition to their morning school projects.
