Art in Tanzania has worked in the Masai village of Butti for over ten years now. We run the village school and pay the teachers salaries. We have recently completed construction of permanent buildings for the school.
Our school now has two classrooms, one for nursery and one for primary classes. It will have running water soon and we are now fund raising for solar powered lighting. We are very happy that the Masai elders have allowed girls to be educated at our school as well as boys.
Volunteers and interns are needed to work with the local teachers in the school and to teach adult Masai warriors and women's groups English, business, handicraft and other skills. Coaching the Masai at football and other sports is also great and unforgettable fun.
Working as a volunteer or intern in Masai land is a truly authentic African experience. Art in Tanzania’s accommodation is in traditional Masai Boma mud huts in Butti village. The village has no electricity or running water and all volunteers and interns are required to observe Masai cultural practices. This makes your time here often humbling but always unforgettable.
Food is delivered to the village and we cook for ourselves. If you fancy a change in the evening you can take a local bus to the nearby town of Mto wa Umbu for a meal and drinks. All the placements are within walking distance of the accommodation. You can combine your Masai village stay with volunteering work in Arusha or Karatu ** ADD LINKS**.
In your free time you can trek in the nearby hills or along the borders of the neighbouring Lake Manyara National Park. Butti Masai village is located between the N'gorongoro conservation area and the Serengeti. You can easily join our low cost volunteer safaris to the National Parks at the weekends. Mount Kilimanjaro isn't far away either and we can help you climb the Machame and the Marangu routes. We also offer trips which involve more travelling to the spice island of Zanzibar with it's beautiful beaches.
